Guide for prospective residents

If you think you might like to live at La Querencia Cohousing, we invite you to begin getting to know us.

Our process is primarily one of self-selection. The most important part of the process is for you to learn enough about La Querencia to decide whether it feels like the right fit for you—while also giving us a chance to get to know you. Our goal is to create a community of people who genuinely want to be here, understand what community life involves, and are able to live well together.

You can think of the items below as a familiarization process. It is not necessary to complete everything, and you’re welcome to explore the items in any order. That said, we encourage prospective residents to do as many as reasonably possible. The more you experience, the easier it is for all of us to determine whether we’re a good match.

Ways to Get to Know La Querencia

We encourage prospective residents to explore our community in some or all of the following ways:

This is often the easiest way to get an initial feel for the community. You’ll find links to upcoming virtual tours on this page.

Visiting in person gives you a feel for the physical space and a chance to meet residents in a relaxed, informal setting.

  • Learn about cohousing in general.

Understanding cohousing more broadly can help you better understand what makes La Querencia unique—and what all cohousing communities tend to share.

Helpful resources:

This gives you a sense of how we communicate, collaborate, and make decisions together.

  • Attend one or more committee meetings

Committees are where much of the day-to-day decisions happen. Attending a meeting can give you insight into how the community functions in practice.

  • Attend one or more community social gatherings

Social time is an important part of community life. This is a great way to experience the tone and rhythm of the community.

  • Spend one-on-one time talking with a current member

Personal conversations are often one of the best ways to get a real sense of what it’s like to live here.

  • Stay in our guest room

We offer a comfortable guest room for $25 per night. Staying here for a night or two can give you a deeper feel for the flow of daily life and how people interact in the community.

  • Become familiar with our community agreements and policies

These documents describe how we live together and what we ask of one another as neighbors.

  • Become familiar with our Bylaws and CC&Rs

These outline the legal and governance structure of the community.

  • Sign our Cohousing Declaration of Commitment

This is a way of acknowledging that you understand the spirit of the community and intend to participate in good faith.

Our Goal

Again, the goal is not to “check every box.” Rather, it’s for all of us to get to know one another well enough to decide whether we’re a good fit.

We’ve found that when people take the time to understand the community—and choose it intentionally—it leads to a stronger, more connected, and more enjoyable place to live.
