Like many cohousing communities, La Querencia brings together people from a wide range of backgrounds, professions, and life stages. Our neighbors include educators, healthcare professionals, creatives, consultants, retirees, and families with energetic kids - along with dogs and cats.

Our population shifts over time but typically includes 30–45 adults and 15–20 children. Households vary widely, including single parents, couples, individuals, and families. Ages range from young children to seniors in their 90s.

We value diversity in all its forms. Our community includes people of different cultural, ethnic, and spiritual backgrounds, as well as a range of identities and abilities. We also embrace a variety of lifestyles—whether that’s food preferences, daily routines, or personal interests. What brings us together is a shared commitment to connection.

La Querencia operates without a traditional hierarchy. Instead, we collaborate on decisions that shape our community, from everyday matters to long-term planning. We use a consensus-based process, taking time to listen carefully and work toward solutions that reflect the needs of the group.

Larger decisions—such as financial commitments or new policies—are discussed and decided collectively during our monthly community meetings. Smaller or more specific matters may be handled by committees, with transparency and opportunities for input from all members.

Our community is primarily self-managed. Residents participate in committees and teams that help oversee finances, organize social events, maintain buildings, and care for shared outdoor spaces. Many individuals also take on specific roles, such as managing community accounting, purchasing shared supplies, or tending to gardens.

Although we are legally structured as a homeowners association (HOA), we do not rely on an outside management company. This hands-on approach helps keep costs lower while strengthening our sense of shared responsibility and involvement.
